Backing Up Your Digital Family Photos

It’s time to talk about your digital photos

Whether you’re recently married, had a new baby, or are planning your yearly family photos, chances are you’re working with a photographer and the discussion of digital files has come up. But what do you do with them?

Downloading digital images

Whether your session was actually shot with a digital camera or film camera, there will be a digital copy of your images. Typically, these digital images are delivered via download through your online gallery.

Digital photos can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Sharing with friends and family

  • Creating copies for photo albums or scrapbooks

  • Posting on social media

  • Using as backgrounds or wallpapers on devices

  • Incorporating into creative projects such as collages or videos

  • Storing as backups in case physical copies are lost or damaged.

Just because you have a copy of your digital photos, doesn’t mean that’s the end. It’s important to make a backup copy of your digital files.

What is digital photo backup?

Digital photo backup refers to the process of creating copies of your digital photos and storing them in another location, such as an external hard drive, cloud storage, or a physical storage device. This ensures that your photos are protected from accidental loss due to hardware failure, theft, or other unforeseen events.

why it's important to have a back up copy of digital photos

Having a backup copy of digital photos is important because it helps to protect them from permanent loss due to hardware failure, accidental deletion, or other unforeseen circumstances. By having a backup copy, you can ensure that your cherished memories and important documents remain safe and accessible.

It is best to back up your digital photos as soon as possible after taking them, and regularly thereafter to ensure you have a secure copy in case of accidental loss or corruption. It's a good idea to have multiple backups, such as cloud storage and physical external hard drives.

To make a backup copy of digital photos, you can store them on an external hard drive, cloud storage service, or a USB flash drive. Make sure to regularly update your backup to ensure that all your photos are saved.

USB for Digital Photos

For all my wedding clients, a USB drive - like these beautiful, crystal, laser engraved USBs from USB Memory Direct - is included standard with your package, so you already have one back up copy ready to go.

Prints are still important

Of course, it’s important to make physical prints from your digital files as well. Photo prints offer a tangible way of holding onto memories and are less likely to be lost in the sea of digital files.

Additionally, prints tend to have a higher resolution and better color accuracy than digital images, making them ideal for framing and displaying. However, digital photos can be easily shared, edited, and stored in multiple locations.

If you’re stuck on what to do with your digital files, or aren’t sure if you have them properly backed up, just reach out to me and we’ll make sure you’re well taken care of!

Nashville Boy Moms – Keeping boys entertained {Family Photographers Nashville}

A little intro

Hey y’all, it’s me! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Jenna. I’ve been a Nashville area family portrait and wedding photographer for more than a decade. I love shooting the connection between families and capturing the little moments that might go by unnoticed. I’m passionate about real, fine are prints and heirloom albums, because I believe memories shouldn’t be lost to the hard drive.

My boys

I’m also a mom to two boys! We have a first grader and a toddler. The age difference between our boys is exactly five years, and we love it! However, it can sometimes be a little challenging deciding what to do that will entertain both of them. Here are three things we love to do where everyone has fun.

Swim

Did you know the City of Murfreesboro Parks and Rec department has an indoor pool that is open year-round? It’s true! We love this pool because of the awesome water park aspect of it and the fact that it’s very shallow. There are lots of things for our older son to jump and splash on, keeping him engaged. There is also a beach entry to the pool, which means we can let our toddler run free without worrying if he’ll fall in.

Zoo Days

The Nashville Zoo is always a big hit with our two boys. There are tons of yearly membership options, which means you can come and go as much as you please. Some days we spend the whole day, and others we only plan to see a little bit of the Zoo. We’re looking forward to trying out Boo at the Zoo for the first time this fall!

Family picnic

For Christmas this year, my mom bought me a membership to the Arrington Vineyards wine club. I love it for many reasons, but I especially love visiting the beautiful vineyard. It’s rolling hills have incredible views, and there is plenty of wide open space for our boys to run and play. We love grabbing some food to go from Chipotle or Chick fil A, then spreading our family quilt for an outdoor dinner as a family. On the weekends, there is typically live music as well. It’s a win-win for our family … the kids have space to play and enjoy the adventure of an outdoor meal, and we adults can relax with a nice glass of wine and take in the views.

Family Photo Location Ideas

Speaking of Arrington Vineyards, it happens to also be one of my favorite places to photograph my clients! It’s just a short drive from most parts of Nashville and Franklin, and the views make an excellent location for family pictures. There is no fee for taking photos at Arrington, and as a bonus you can grab a bottle of their delicious wine while you’re there!
